Visiting Clinton

The above photo and the one below show two separate islands just north of Clinton.  They were both covered with pelicans, vultures, gulls, and egrets.

The photo above shows the storm just to our west.  We had a head wind slowing us down, but the radar showed severe thunderstorms heading right for us.  We were trying to get to the lock before the storm hit.  At least at the lock, we could duck behind a barrier wall for protection.  The storm went mostly north of us and it only rained.  Started raining while we were passing through the lock.  No wind, so we were happy about that.

Soaking wet after navigating in rain for an hour.  Trying to have some fun.

The courthouse in Clinton. An impressive building.

Happiness at the bead shop.

Bob got a kick out of this sign. (the fine print below "Jonesy's Tap" says, "we get ugly early"

Clinton Marina - very very nice facility and the employees were all very helpful and attentive to our needs.  The other boaters were really super, too. Kathy gave us much needed advice on sandbar and islands for anchoring out between Clinton and Davenport and another sweet guy hailed us down & offered to loan us his car so we could go sighseeing in the area.  Unfortunately, we need to move on down the river, so no use for the car, but my golly, how nice is that?

Within walking distance of the marina is the home of George Curtis, a lumber baron.  He had the home build in 1883. Unfortunately, they only give tours Wed. afternoon from 1:30 - 3:30 and we arrived too late, yesterday.

The Historical Society Museum, also, within walking distance displays collectibles, photos, furniture, memorabilia from the early settlers.  Clinton was a big lumber town back in the early days.  Unfortunately, the hours are from 9:00 - 11:00 M-F and by the time we got up, breakfast, walked the dog, walked the 5 blocks down, it was pretty close to 11:00.  Guess we will just have to come back another time.
